Safety & Support
A safety plan is a personal, practical plan to help you stay safer — whether you are staying, preparing to leave, or have already left.
Starting a safety plan
- Identify safer areas at home and the exits you could use.
- Agree on a code word with someone you trust that means you need help.
- Keep important numbers memorized or written somewhere safe.
If you are preparing to leave
- Consider keeping copies of key documents (ID, birth certificates, medical records) somewhere safe.
- Set aside essentials such as money, medicine, a phone charger and spare keys where possible.
- Think about who could offer a safe place to stay, even temporarily.
Safer spaces and shelters
- The National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233) can help you find shelters and safe spaces near you.
- Verified local shelters will be listed here once confirmed.
